The Long Awaited Deck

I was going to let J post this, but he's been so busy I finally decided to take care of it.  Hopefully he'll like my choice of pictures.  He has been wanting a deck pretty much since we moved into this house. Now that we have it, our big outdoor work is pretty much done.  My last goal is to grow a green thumb and keep the plants I buy from dying.  My lilac bush is looking very sick and I don't know what is wrong.  It really is hit or miss when you are a lazy gardener like me.

From beginning to end:

Wow, it looks good! I am jealous that you have outdoor space like that. It'll probably be a while till we get ours done.

Once again, Jake, I am incredibly impressed with your carpentry skills. Are you guys going to put any kind of handrail or fence on it? It looks great without it, and I bet the kids love jumping off it...

Thanks Joce and Maren. We have no plans for a rail, or, to put it another way, I will absolutely not be putting a railing on unless forced by court order. Actually, I checked with the guy at the deck store and he said you have to have one on anything with greater than 36'' height. Our top part turns out to be exactly 36'' (by coincidence, not by plan).

The only part I was not totally pleased with was the final stain. It was supposed to be a colored stain where the grain would still show through, but it ended up opaque. I chose a color rather recklessly and it ended up a yellow that doesn't match the color of the house. Oops.
